4 Square Vocabulary Strategy

Comparison and contrast can also be applied to vocabulary strategies.  When specific words must be learned, four-square vocabulary can be exceedingly helpful (Blachowicz & Fisher, 2006).  Four-square vocabulary is created by creating a foldable with four sections.  If creating a foldable, fold a sheet of paper so that it has eight boxes, creating space for four target words (front and back).  Each section represents a different element of the word.  One section contains the target word.  Another contains the definition.  The final two sections contain a synonym and antonym prospectively.
